RESCHEDULED DATE DUE TO WEATHER
Hope you can join us for a Honeysuckle Hack at the Brentwood Wetland Arboretum on Saturday, April 20, 2024 from 9 a.m. to noon. Volunteer Check-in starts at 8:45 a.m. Parking is available at 3000 S Brentwood Blvd. We will be working along the riparian corridor of Deer Creek removing invasive bush honeysuckle by hand pulling and root docking.
The root docking approach involves cutting the roots away from the root collar and removing the root collar, trunk and branches of the honeysuckle plant, while leaving the roots in place. Because re-sprouting typically occurs at the root collar, there is little danger of re-sprouting, and no chemicals are needed. Soil disturbance is minimal, and there are no stumps to trip over. View this Root Docking Primer video for more info. on this technique, and visit this page.
Spring is the perfect time to remove these invasive plants to decrease competition and allow the native species to fill in and dominate the landscape. Please dress for the weather. Volunteers are encouraged to wear comfortable clothes that they do not mind getting dirty. This is a family friendly event that is open to all ages.
Things to bring:
- waiver form (Print out or email in advance)
- safety glasses
- water bottle
- sunscreen
- bug spray
- hat
- sturdy walking shoes
- dress in layers
Hopefully the weather will cooperate. Registered participants will be notified through email by 5 p.m. on Friday, April 19th, if cancellation becomes necessary.
